Customer Reviews

good but not a training manual - Rated 4/5
I read this book expecting to learn something new, but was a little dissapointed. I loved reading this, full of stories to give strength to those who are flagging. If you have a problem dog, and are considering the worst, please read this book,it puts problems into context and gives the courage to bite the bullet and continue. It may not have any secrets, but it raises the spirits of problem dog owners, and gives them the energy to keep trying, all will come good in the end. It doesn't contain any training tips people with problem dogs don't already know it's more of a feel good book to enthuse you to the next level, a break from the continual barrage of techniques, helping you to see the most important thing isn't a fancy technique, but the enthusiasm to continue, not to give up and to always hope that one day it will all click into place (as it usually does).

Great to hear something good about owners... - Rated 5/5
Dog owners get a rough time nowadays, with the odd few who don't pick up after or refuse to train their dogs, ruining all of our reputations. We get dirty looks from people if we own the 'wrong' breed of dog, as people assume because one rottie bit someone...they all will!
It's refreshing that Jan Fennell has written a book on the good things. Yes, they may not be many 'secrets' in there, but the positive stories inside are lovely to read and bring a positive light to being associated with the sometimes shady 'dog world'.
Not a book to study, and not one that will hurt the brain, but simply a book that will inspire you to be a better owners (or encourage you to give yourself a pat on the back if your already great!)

Inspirational - Rated 5/5
A Dogs Best Friend is just that pure inspiration, it explains what kept her going in the face of criticism from most of the rest of the dog world.

Where it doesn't explain the process of Amichien Bonding, it has no need to as Jan's first 2 books explain that completely.

Whilst reading this book I found myself on a complete high, that made me want to help dogs even more than I have already found myself doing after reading her other books.

If it seems that everyone around you is an "expert" and they have you a little unsure of yourself, this is something to re-assure you that you are deffinately on the right track with Amichien Bonding, both for you and your dog.

For those that have have read the other books, this is a great follow on and will make you want to get all your friends to read the first books. It also shows that some dog owners go above and beyond the call of duty that we thought we were getting into when we bought or rescued a dog, and that maybe we should be doing something more.

Secrets- what secrets? - Rated 2/5
Another book from this prolific author. For those that want an entertaining read this is the book for you. Full of anecdotal tales from Jan's life.
For the serious student of dog behaviour, this is not the book for you. Despite the book's subtitle of 'The secrets that make good dog owners great' there are very few secrets in there at all. The book is full of out dated pack theory and there is very little information that any dog owner doesn't already know. A very disappointing book for the serious dog lover.
