Good fun, very readable, not outstanding - Rated
Having previously read "E", I was happy to see that Matt Beaumont is able to break free from the novelty of the e-mail-formatted novel and write an engaging 'conventional' sorry.
This is a very readable comedy of errors about the central character, Alvin, and his naive ability to get himself into terrible circumstances by always trying to do what he believes is the right thing. It's not laugh-out-loud funny but it has its amusing twists and turns.
The portrayal of the group of under-educated, under-motivated teenagers is very carefully and thoughtfully done, with a bunch of pop culture references that make the book seem very up to date now, but this will probably be the same thing that date the book in five years' time.
What I'm really looking for is the book that's halfway between this book (a bit too light) and Lionel Schriver's "We Need To Talk About Kevin" (a bit too dark). Suggestions on a postcard..?
Great book - Rated
This book reminded me a bit of a Tom Sharpe novel but set in a rough and rowdy comprehensive school rather than a public school. The central character Alvin, suffers the consequences of his (usually) well-intentioned actions. Very quick moving and easy to read.
Had me laughing out loud several times. But I did have a few criticisms. It is sometimes a bit predictable - you can usually see what the consequences of Alvin's actions are going to be. And the end is definitely a little bit too 'happy ever after'. But the final twist in the last few pages is totally unexpected
Despite the criticisms I still give it 5 stars because it is a nice easy, witty and entertaining read.
An enjoyable read... - Rated
I really enjoyed this book. Not as 'laugh out loud' funny as 'e', certainly a better read than 'Staying Alive' [Matt Beaumont's other books]. The characters are well developed and the style and timing that Beaumont connects them as the plot develops is excellent. The only reason for not giving 5 stars- the end is a somewhat predictable. Beaumonts first attempt at writing without any reference to his ad agency/copy writing past is without doubt a success.
