Absolutely brilliant!! - Rated 5/5
This has been the first novel I have read by Sara MacDonald, and I just couldn't put the book down. I am an avid reader of all types of books, both fiction and non-fiction, but this book has to be one of the very best books I have read in years. The book is beautifully written by setting the scene in Cornwall, without boring you with too much detail. The characters are down to earth everyday people that you can relate to, and you feel so attached to, as you get more involved with the storyline. What I loved about the book was the unusual and unpredictable story, that kept me turning the pages till the early hours. I cannot wait to read the other books by Sara, and I would recommend this book to anybody looking for a brilliant read.

Emotionally beautiful - Rated 5/5
How this book has not been picked by the major reviewers I do not know . The tenderness of this book shows deep and emotional feelings. Her beauty and lovingness comes out in her books Jeremy Clarke

FAB!!! - Rated 5/5
Brilliantly written! Moving stories of both present and past. Deep thoughts and wonderful prose. Characters that would stay with me for life. And lessons learned I would be foolish not to take to heart.

A must read!

An Emotional Journey - Rated 4/5
I really like this book - have read it a few times now. Both stories, past and present, keep the reader interested and the characters become people you care about. Every time I read it I cry at the end. I can picture the house in London where Gabby and Mark live, the whole story is wonderfully emotional and grips you from beginning to end.

A New Version of The Loving Spirit? - Rated 4/5
I have just finished living with this book close to hand for three days. I was moved to tears by it from time to time and felt very caught up with the dangerous dramas threaded throughout. I live in the area that this is loosely set in (The Helford River) and recognise the geography and history that Sara Macdonald describes so well. Nothing grates or irritates, she really does have a comfortable feel for Cornish life, so often reduced to oo arrs by other writers. I did feel that she may have stolen the theme of the figurehead from Daphne du Maurier at first but have to say that soon stopped mattering. Well done Sara, you are a modest and quiet writer who can grip the reader with truly touching situations and telling descriptions of emotions that felt uncomfortably close to home sometimes. I highly recommend this book especially as I have chosen it as our summer book club choice here on The Lizard.
