Absolute Rubbish - Rated
I read ''Girl with the Pearl Earring'' and thought it was very good indeed. I went on to read two other books by Tracy Chevalier and when I was in the airport a few months ago I picked this latest title up. I have just got around to reading it and I had to force myself to finish it. It was boring, childish and it will be the last book that I buy/read by this author. The only thing that interested me mildly was the circus backdrop to the tale - other than that it was almost formulaic, like some ''penny dreadful''. Please save yourself the time and money and don't bother with this book!!
Very Entertaining - Rated
I agree with a recent reviewer in that I didn't learn much about William Blake from this book, but then again the book doesn't purport to be about Mr Blake and he hasn't got such a starring role as Vermeer in "Girl with a Pearl Earring". Nevertheless, the book made me want to find out more about him and also about the existence of the circus in London at the time.
I love this author, she writes beautifully and I have enjoyed her previous novels. She describes the awe of a family from a village in Dorset arriving in London brilliantly, even then it must have been quite a sight and noisy! The characters are well drawn, easily imagined in your mind's eye from her descriptions and the story rolls along at a good pace, with interesting historical snippets here and there (in particular I liked the origin of the word "bodger").
Another hit as far as I'm concerned!
Intelligent story telling but could have been more complex - Rated
I came away from this book feeling that I had learnt something about the life of the ordinary person in to 1790s in London.
The author had clearly done a lot of research into William Blake and cleverly combined this with a completely fictious story to make a novel which had a very sweet and appealing story running through it in and around the life of the poet William Blake.
Fictional books are fine but when they can be used to draw on factual happenings and people so much more life can be given to the experience of reading.
The story was very simplistic and could have been a lot deeper at times but as long as you are not expecting a great work of fiction then a pretty good book.
truly awful - Rated
I have read and enjoyed previous Tracy Chevalier books but I was beginning to think I was reading a Dan Brown, the writing was that poor ..or a childrens book. After seeing the other reviews i'm not going to feel so guilty about giving up on it.
Disappointing - Rated
After reading Girl with a Pearl Earring only recently, I was eagerly antcipating the release of Burning Bright. It turned out to be one of the most boring books I've ever read. In comparison to Girl.., where the characters were developed and the book was almost exploding with this undercurrent of emotions, Burning Bright seemed bland and so focused on describing the settings that there was no room for developing characters. Indeed, I was expecting Jem and Maggie's relationship to at least TRY and take off! William Blake was barely in the picture and unlike Girl with or any other of Chevelier's books, I found all of the characters unpleasant or annoying! You are much better off reading another one of her books. I highly recommend The Lady and The Unicorn, and obviously Girl With a Pearl Earring.
