Much better than the cover suggests! - Rated The cover doesn't do justice to this book. Times tables are never the most exciting of topics, but this book is the best of its type I've found so far, presenting the topic in a visually appealing and varied way. All the inside pages are in full colour, with cartoons, pictures, mazes etc. Gold star stickers are included, to be awarded when a page is completed correctly. The book is aimed at 'Key Stage 2' children around 8-9 years old, but would also be suitable for slightly older children who could use some practice. It revises the easier tables (2, 3, 4, 5, 10), and focusses mainly on the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables. There is a wide variety of different approaches to practising tables, including puzzles, practical problems (a CD costs 7 pounds, so how many CDs can you buy for 35 pounds etc.) mazes, as well as more conventional multiplication sums. There is also a strong focus on helping children see patterns and understand how the tables work and relate to each other - for example understanding that multiplying by 2 and then by 5 is the same as multiplying by 10, etc. My daughter was getting very bored trying to learn her tables, so she's been doing one page from this book each evening. It's no great chore, as it takes her 2-5 minutes, and there's often some colouring or a maze included, so it doesn't feel too much like work, and she gets a gold star each time. It is going in, slowly and painlessly, and she's been really pleased when she's worked out a pattern or discovered a new hint for remembering something. I would thoroughly recommend this book to any 7-11 year old child who needs practice and a fresh approach to times tables.
