Customer Reviews

good learning source - boys will love it - Rated 5/5
I am homeschooling and this was a good way to introduce topics on Woods + forests, how paper is made, recycling, electricity, rivers and where water in the tap comes from. This is a very informative book, I learnt a lot particularly about electricity and the processing of water. The pictures are very detailed with lots of interesting things going on to maintain their interest in the topics.

Section headings:
Everyone is a worker; Mother's work is never done; A voyage on a ship; Sergeant Murphy of the Busytown police department; Firemen to the rescue; A visit to the hospital; The train trip; Wood and how we use it; Digging coal to make electricity work for us; Building a new road; Water.

My 6 year old says: The pictures were very good, especially the funny parts like when they are all getting on the ship and the bumpy road before they made a new road.

Nostalgia IS what it used to be - Rated 5/5
I have had this book since I was a child (b. 1970) and have got the pleasure of introducing it to my 2 year old son. He loves it - the pictures are educational but also are done in a fun way - e.g. animals replacing people. There is one chapter that seems very outdated (A mother's work is never done!) but aside from that it is still relevant.

The good things is that there are plenty of pictures telling a story that you can make words up to, and as they get older they will be able to pick up the written words themselves.

Highly recommended - no wonder designer Paul Smith recently mentioned a RIchard Scarry book as his favoutire from childhood

brilliant book for 4 years plus - Rated 5/5
My son loves this book and so do I. Fantastic pictures that you can spend a long time looking at, this book takes you through a voyage on a ship, what firemen do, where wood comes from and how it is turned into boats, furniture etc and much more. I enjoy the fact that this book leads to discussions with my son at bedtime - a change from just reading a story to him.

A book you can take to bed, on holiday, in the car etc etc etc - Rated 5/5
My son, 4, and I, can find things to laugh about on each page of this busy book! We have several favourite pages and the book falls open on one of them, it is looked at and read so many times. It can take some time to get through this book.......it is not possible for us to rush through it. Just wish we had discovered it sooner.

A fabulously detailed book to learn from - Rated 5/5
We picked up the 1968 edition of this book from a car boot sale some years ago for our boys, and our eldest (now 5) has read it fairly solidly ever since. He pores over the mining pictures (about the only children's book which includes mining), electricity generation and everything else. This has to be the perfect picture book to teach youngsters about the complexity of the world. Now we've been asked by our 5 year old to buy the new edition to replace a rapidly aging older copy!
