Book Details / Review - supplied by Amazon UK

Cecelia Ahern's debut novel, PS, I Love You, follows the engaging, witty and occasionally sappy reawakening of Holly, a young Irish widow who must put her life back together after she loses her husband Gerry to a brain tumour. Ahern, the twentysomething daughter of Ireland's Prime Minister, has discovered a clever and original twist to the Moving On After Death concept made famous by novelists and screenwriters alike--Gerry has left Holly a series of letters designed to help her face the year ahead and carry on with her life. As the novel takes readers through the seasons (and through Gerry's monthly directives), we watch as Holly finds a new job, takes a holiday to Spain with her girlfriends, and sorts through her beloved husband's belongings. Accompanying Holly throughout the healing process is a cast of friends and family members who add as much to the novel's success as Holly's own tale of survival. In fact, it is these supporting characters' mini-dramas that make PS, I Love You more than just another superficial tearjerker with the obligatory episode at a karaoke bar. Ahern shows real talent for capturing the essence of an interaction between friends and foes alike; even if Holly's circle of friends does resemble the gang from Bridget Jones a bit too neatly to ignore (her best friend is even called Sharon).

While her style can be at times repetitive and her delivery is occasionally amateurish, Ahern deserves credit for a spirited first effort. If PS, I Love You is any indication of this author's talent, readers have much to look forward to as Ahern matures as a novelist and a storyteller. --Gisele Toueg, Amazon.com

Absolutley fantastic - Rated 5/5
I found this book while looking on amazon for some good "chicklit" books to take away to college with me, I read the reviews and it sounded like a good book so I bought it. The reviews do not give it enough credit, from the very begining it has a flood of emotions. I immediatly fell in love with the characters and could not put it down, As I had exams I was revising during the day and would go to bed early so I could read more. Every night I would read it and be in fits of laughter and also sadness at the characters struggle to come to terms with the death of her husband, but the husband helps her and guides her through the first 10 months of the start of her life without him. I am currently letting my mum borrow it so she can enjoy such a wonderful book. I would recommend this book to anyone who like a good Chicklit book.
I cannot wait to read some more of Cecelia Ahern books.

My favorite author - Rated 4/5
If you're a Ceclia Ahern fan, then you know what I'm about to say. If you're not one, wait. I'd start with another book of hers before this one and DON'T SEE THE MOVIE!!!!!! Try IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW or even THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES before reading P.S. I LOVE YOU.

My reasons? This is still a good book, but it's not her best. And it's not like her other works at least in my mind. While I LOVE this author, I did find the writing style a bit repetitive and felt like she had "dumbed-down" some of the book. This opinion came after reading her other works first. So my recommendation is to start with something else and then go back to this if you want.

This was Ahern's first book and you can't fault her for not getting it just right, but it is still an okay novel.

beautful. - Rated 5/5
I feel that the negative views published are somewhat harsh, as i found the book hilarious, touching and beautiful. Never have i felt so many emotions in one read. Its a perfect beach/pool book, the 'amateurish style' makes it an easy simple read that you dont really have to work at and you can pick it up and know exactly where u left off! definitely a must read, i devoured it in a few days!!! Oh and by the way, the book is sooooooo much better than the film!

Absolute crap - Rated 1/5
I bought this book for my wife for our holiday 4 years ago.The reason I bought it is I was intrigued with the idea of Bertie Ahern's daughter being a 'brilliant' writer. On 'mature recollection' my wife who is avid reader finished the book and thought it was rubbish.
I read the book then and was actually embarrassed reading it.If it was an essay for he Leaving Cert. I'd give it say it was okay. But to think it was one of the bestsellers of the year, the mind boggles.
The writer's who do not have any famous fathers' must be envious of this success story.
I've wrote this review 4 years on as I feel it has to go down as the most overrated book ever.
Childish is a word of I've seen being used to describe it and I have to agree.
To be honest I didn't even finish the book as I would have rather been at the dentist.

It's a shame... - Rated 2/5
... because I did have high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, as the author seems to have no idea what it would be like to lose someone, she could have benefitted from doing some research. Sitting around the house feeling miserable is a bit of a simplistic view.

It's also obvious that the author is writing about characters much older than she is, as they all seem a bit childish to me, as is the writing style. But maturity could improve this.

All-in-all, you'd be better off reading "Anybody out there?" by Marian keyes.
