fabulous! - Rated
Bought a copy of Nigel's Tender as a gift, loved it so much that I bought another copy for myself - and I'm not much of a cook! But find the recipes straight-forward and easy to follow, as well as delicious.
The first totally useful cookbook - Rated
How many times have you made a special dinner to a great recipe and then struggled to find innovative vegetables that come up to the same standard? All too often you're fobbed off with "serve with roast potatoes and steamed green vegetables". Or, even if you get lucky, you can't find the quality ingredients your dish demands. So, you decide to grow your own, but how to do it and which varieties suit which styles of food? Nigel's latest book has all the answers from growing, through matching varieties to purpose, to recipes from standards to those that are little more than wonderful ideas. Make no mistake, this is a great book, an obvious classic that will be used for decades. I've had problems with Nigel's more recent offerings (see my review of "The Kitchen Diaries"), which I've thought so wordy that I've been inclined not to bother seeking out their undoubted treasures. But with Tender: v1 there are no such issues. It's well organised (alphabetical!), and brilliantly structured within each entry. This book is so packed with useful information, illustrative anecdote, and great recipes that it is almost impossible to review! And the recipes range from the vegetables themselves to full meals putting them in context. I only have one criticism. In a wonderful section on potatoes (almost a book in its own right), Nigel suggests that the spud has little food value. He is mistaken in this. We compensate for the relatively low concentration of vitamins etc. per unit spud by eating tons of the things! They are so cheap, filling, versatile and appetising. Still, I had to search for this, and it doesn't really detract from a great book. There will no doubt be a soft cover version of this sometime. But I would get the hard copy. It's a great price and will last much longer, given the extensive use it will get!
A good start for a change in attitude - Rated
I bought this book because I wanted to start basing my meals around a vegetable instead of a meat (and hopefully save a few pounds in the process). I also wanted to see if I could grow my own veg. This book is definitely a winner on both accounts. It gave me confidence to try and grow my own veg with lots of information and advice and I have also found constant inspiration for veg based meals. This book is now my veg bible.
