Book Details / Review - supplied by Amazon UK

Cecelia Ahern's debut novel, PS, I Love You, follows the engaging, witty and occasionally sappy reawakening of Holly, a young Irish widow who must put her life back together after she loses her husband Gerry to a brain tumour. Ahern, the twentysomething daughter of Ireland's Prime Minister, has discovered a clever and original twist to the Moving On After Death concept made famous by novelists and screenwriters alike--Gerry has left Holly a series of letters designed to help her face the year ahead and carry on with her life. As the novel takes readers through the seasons (and through Gerry's monthly directives), we watch as Holly finds a new job, takes a holiday to Spain with her girlfriends, and sorts through her beloved husband's belongings. Accompanying Holly throughout the healing process is a cast of friends and family members who add as much to the novel's success as Holly's own tale of survival. In fact, it is these supporting characters' mini-dramas that make PS, I Love You more than just another superficial tearjerker with the obligatory episode at a karaoke bar. Ahern shows real talent for capturing the essence of an interaction between friends and foes alike; even if Holly's circle of friends does resemble the gang from Bridget Jones a bit too neatly to ignore (her best friend is even called Sharon).

While her style can be at times repetitive and her delivery is occasionally amateurish, Ahern deserves credit for a spirited first effort. If PS, I Love You is any indication of this author's talent, readers have much to look forward to as Ahern matures as a novelist and a storyteller. --Gisele Toueg, Amazon.com

Customer Reviews

really beautiful and inspiring - Rated 5/5
i can't understand why there are so many bad reviews about this book, im guessing none of these people have ever experienced love enough to be able to relate to the character. it was an inspiring book and v well written, it makes u really appreicate what you've got as any second it could be taken from you. it gives you hope that if soemthing that awful does happen life will get better and there is a way to cope with it without just commiting suicide as i'm sure most people would consder doing, it makes you want to cherish those good times you have with the people you are close to and be thankful that you have those people to share the memories with. overall i couldnt put the book down, im not denying it was a v sad read but it was written in a way that gives you hope in any situation that arrises. definitly would recommend.

Great Read - Rated 5/5
I have to say that this is the first book of Cecelia Ahern books that I have read and I wasn't disapointed. I saw her on the Tv talking about her new book out and what similarities it had to her book P.S I Love You. It was a great read and I couldn't put it down. Like her character, I couldn't wait to read what the next letter from her dead husband would say. I recommended this book wholeheartedly to those sentimental types out there. I can't wait to read her new book!

brill made me laugh and cry. - Rated 5/5
i think this book is brill i could'nt put it down, it made me laugh and feel a tear, it is written as if you are being told the story by a mate and not a writer and that adds to the charm, i think. if you are abit romantic, but not liking sloppy stories, and like a story that makes you feel warm inside READ THIS.

Ashame some people disliked this book, I LOVED IT!! - Rated 5/5
Having watched the film recently, I felt I had to read the book as I had been told it was so much better on paper. They were right!! It was nothing like the film!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Ps I Love You". Found myself laughing and crying through most of it, a fantastic read! I suppose it just needs to be your cup of tea....

didn't really ring true for me...but worth a look?! - Rated 3/5
Unlike many people i have spoken to who 'instantly loved' this book, at first i couldn't bear it. The first time i tried to read it i quickly gave up as i was not at all interested in the story and i found the writing style difficult to get to grips with, in a way that i can't really explain (it seems to be a mixture of extremely casual prose, very cheesy and cliche but at the same time very formal and without real emotion).

I did give it a second chance though, and although it certainly wasn't a book you can't put down (by any means) i must be honest and say i ended up enjoying it. There were occasional moments of honesty that seemed to come through and actually brought tears to my eyes, although for the most part it lacked any of the true raw emotion that surely a young woman would experience being suddenly widowed?

The book isn't bad per se, but it could have been better i think, and if you're like me you will find it hard to get in to and easy to forget about once finished. That doesn't mean it is without enjoyment though in between.

To sum up i'd say it's worth a go if you're interested but don't expect great things.
