a fascinating introduction to the theology of Bonhoeffer - Rated
As an Religious studies A-level student, I found this book invaluable as an introduction to the theology of such a great man. It gives an insight into both the man and his thoughts, set out in an easy to understand and highly lucid manner. definately a book worth reading, whether studying theology, or simply interested in the subject.
My choice on Bonhoeffer, read it and appreciate it. - Rated
It was suggested to me to study Dietrich Bonhoeffer for my History dissertation, and this book was my major find of all those listed on the catalogues. I read a lot and was impressed, but for sheer committment to providing the biographical/autobiographical essentials in a comprehensive and historiographical manner, this one far exceeded anything I had come across. Not so much an academic book, which it is of course, this book is really what the authors Messrs Kelly and Burton-Nelson call it; 'The essential writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer'. Who was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, I hear you ask. You don't have to be a Theologian, Academic or Historian to appreciate this book. My prediction is it will become a bestseller, no doubt after the film if not before. Don't be put off by preconceived ideas, discover quote upon quote that speaks as much for today as it did then. This book allows you a comprehensive introduction covering major events in Bonhoeffer's life from 1906 -1945, and a feast of writings arranged in categories which could compose mini- books themselves, for example: his letters and papers from prison; his letters to his fiancee; his letters to his close friends; his letters to his family. Discover the complex weave that his life followed, and the heroic words he used when with his co-conspirators he faced his death on an April morning. Glimpse the world response from outside Germany through the eyes of another, not after the event, but during it, and if you ever wanted more insight into how it really was for someone who could have walked away from the Germany of 1933-45, this book may surprise you.
