Had to read for school - Rated 4/5
Let me just start by saying that this is not the typical book I would ever think of reading o my own time, my class read it for school. This book has a lot to do with sex and betrayal. I would recommend that if you ever meet a goddess never to get on her bad side, because she might send you to the Underworld. If you are really in to the whole “women goddess” thing this is a great book about a woman who takes control and sends her husband to the Underworld. While throughout the book she is finding herself and learning that every part of you is important.
This book is about a women goddess who goes to her dad who is also a god and gets the me which are powers. She is then married to Dumuzi and the relationship goes down hill from there. He becomes obsessed with being King and then wishes to be set free from his wife. Inanna then decides to take a trip to the Underworld and while she is there she is killed and hung on a hook. Then her dear friend goes to the gods and one god helps by sending creatures and they get Inanna back and in her place they take her husband and his sister to live in the Underworld for six months each. This is a good read for anyone interested in Sumerian literature who would like to read more about a strong women goddess.

Wonderful - Rated 5/5
Not just a translation of ancient Sumerian stories, but a re-writing to try and capture the rhythm and spirit of the originals, without deviating too far from the literal translation. The authors have also sought to return the stories to their original chronology and provide an insight into their deeper meaning. I found both the stories and their interpretation fascinating and totally convincing.
I have subsequently discovered one or two more stories concerning Inanna, which were not included, but despite this a delightful read.

Fascinating - Rated 5/5
I picked up this book randomly from a friend's bookshelf, and read it from start to finish in a day. It begins with an evocative translation of the Sumerian myths surrounding Inanna and the hymns dedicated to her. Much care had been taken by the authors to keep the rythym of the wording constant, so it is not merely a dry translation, but has a feel and life to it. Following this is an interesting overview of Sumerian culture, and an analysis of the myths and hymns themselves. I found these two sections incredibly useful to my understanding and enjoyment of the translations.

Definitely recommended for those curious about Inanna or Sumer mythology. It is comprehensive and well-written, not merely a dry history text.
