Rebuilding or Demolition? - Rated 2/5
When this book came out, it was something new and bright: at last, a Soviet leader who could lay out a personal vision in print, something none had done since Lenin (not, though, necessarily a very good omen...)

Looking back now, after 20 years, we can see that there was destruction of a collapsing but possibly reformable system, but no rebuilding, no "perestroika".

The book is really a mixture of hope, idea and personal anecdote. Really, overall, not at all impressive, something possibly reflected in its used value! For example, Gorbachev (once described --prior to accession to Politburo-- as "a typical Soviet bureaucrat hog!") goes to the ZIL car plant in Moscow:the book goes into radiantly hopeful plans to improve the plant etc...now it does not even exist. So perestroika, so, for the moment and thanks partly to this useless man, Russia. For years this man sat on the pinnacle of Soviet semi-dictatorial power and...did nothing with it. This book is a monument to indolence and complacency. A book with frankly little to recommend it except to history students.
