More than provinding a scholarly and comprehensive study into greek mythology, Vernant narrates interestingly and in an enjoyable way the way in which the greeks understood their world through myths and gods. It is not a collection of different myths, but rather, a story (as if it were told to a child) of how gods, men and the universe relate togheter. As well as narrating some of the most common myths, Vernant gives inisights into what the stories and their charcaters represent and symbolize to the greek people.
The book is a fine starting point into the exploration of myths, and what a myth is as such. In reading it, it shows how a myth can not only be a rigid and static truth, but how it can be told in many different ways and many different versions.
