Average vampire fiction - Rated
This book was recommended to me by amazon. I read a lot of Urban Fantasy / Romance so I and I knew I liked the sound of having a protagonist who was a half vampire. However, it became clear to me within the first few chapters that the book was lacking. It wasn't until near the end that the book picked up pace.
The story belted along at a frantic pace, however, it felt disjointed and also as though too many ideas were thrown into the melting pot. The relationship between Cat and Bones seemed very unrealistic, given that in the first instance they had only met a few days before. Cat was meant to be tough but she gave into Bones all too easily at the beginning by joining him in his training. The book tries to sell Cat as a rebellious young woman who won't be told what to do, but in the end she seemed a bit watered down.
My biggest problem with this book was with the character of Bones. He seemed to be a cross between Spike and Mr Darcy. Bones's speech patterns seemed very irregular and as an English person I can testify that I don't use the words `pet' or `luv' in every sentence. There was a lack of understanding about British speech patterns in writing the character, and I think the language is the key to that character and it didn't sit right. Also, Bones' back story/ history was anachronistic and was full of little holes. This may not seem a major problem to most readers but if you're going to right about a vampire who is from a different country then at least get the research right.
There were some positives about the book. I enjoyed the idea of having a half vampire/ half human protagonist; and some of the ideas behind the vampire myth were very nifty. I thought that when the book did pick up pace it was considerably better.
A little gem - Rated
I bought this book after reading some of the reviews on Amazon, so thank you, all you readers. I thought the book was an extremely enjoyable read. I really like the heroine, Cat or Kitten, as her vampire boyfriend calls her.I found the dialogue between Cat and Bones witty and well written. The only grip I did have was that I found Cat's mother really annoying. I will certainly be buying the next book in the series.
Hooked.... - Rated
I bought this book on impulse after having spent about two hours in the book shop (not unusual for me) but I was determined to buy something.
I was not sure what to expect but this book was fantastic. I absolutely fell in love with the characters (one in particular) and loved the flow of the story.
Cat Crawfield is a half human half vampire who kills vampires, believing them all to be evil killers. The story picks up pace quickly and soon Bones is introduced and I was captured. I will admit that bones did put me in mind of Spike from Buffy as other reviewers have mentioned, but I was able to get past this fact mainly because I am a Buffy fan and was a huge Spike fan and miss the series.
I was a little shocked at the ending because this book is offered as paranormal romance, but there is a sequel coming in April 08 and I do really hope that things turn out differently by the end of that book. I am a romance fan, paranormal or otherwise, and do hope the series sticks with that premise.
Other than the ending which only left me wanting more, I enjoyed this book and have not felt so wholly captured since reading the first Black Dagger Brotherhood book by JR Ward.
Eagerly awaiting the second book while waiting for the next BDB installment.
Wow!! - Rated
I wasn't sure if I would like this - I bought it on an Amazon recommendation (which have steered me wrong before) - but I loved it!!! The heroine was smartass, sexy, honest and well deserving of the nickname 'Red Reaper', and the hero - whoooo!!!! Hot doesn't come close to describing Bones!
The story was excellent - background smoothly interposed with the action, seriously interesting characters, and a premise that I haven't seen anywhere before!
If you are fed up of angst ridden vampires, and limp heroines awaiting rescue, then grab this book and now!! The fighting, the steamy love-making scenes, all of it, 10/10!!
Half vampire Vengence - Rated
Catherine Crawfield is a half-vampire destroying vampires left, right and centre trying to keep the love of her mother who was date raped by a new made vampire. One night she targets Bones and her world changes forever. Bones not only hones her half-vampire skills making her stronger and tougher but also makes her question her beliefs and the values that she has been raised with - especially in regard to vampires.
At the introduction of Bones into the book I found it a bit hard going - Bones sounds to much like Spike out of Buffy the vampire slayer - with his British accent and the desprition of his appearance. A lot of his dialogue even sounded scripted straight out of the series. Having read past that and how the characters developed in the story I could not put the book down. I absolutely loved this book and once having read it went straight back and re-read it. I am eagerly looking forward to the the next book in the series. People who read (as I do) Charlaine Harris, Kelly Armstrong, Patricia Briggs, MaryJanice Davidson will I am sure fully enjoy this book
