An engaging story and good introduction to literary subtlety - Rated
My 10-year-old read this and loved it so much she insisted I read it to my 6-year-old. So I did, and the 6-year-old was also fascinated. On the surface the story moves simply and steadily, with humor and suspense. It's about six Dutch kids who, under the brilliantly subtle guidance of a benevolent schoolteacher, get the whole village working together to bring storks back to roost on their rooftops. DeJong includes some fairly sophisticated irony and subtlety in the development of his main characters and their interrelationships that really caught the attention of my 10-year-old. The book taught her to think about what was going on "between the lines" in ways that much of what she reads does not. Although an appreciation of these subtleties is not a prerequisite for liking the story, I think this book would be most thoroughly enjoyed by a child who has been exposed to a wide variety of quality literature. I think it is less suitable for someone who needs instant gratification.
