Difficult to read out-loud - Rated
I think there are 2 types of book for kids: those that you read out-loud and roll off the tongue easily, and those that don't ie best read in your head. Although it's a good story... this one just doesn't roll off the tongue easily and I continually trip and stumble over the words. Although I don't think it's a bad thing for kids to occasionally hear their parents making mistakes whilst reading (we all do, don't we?!), I think most kids would rather hear a pleasantly flowing story that the parents can then adapt with character voices etc BECAUSE it's easy to read aloud. Having said that, my 3 year old daughter enjoys this book and does request it quite a lot... my husband got a request for it the other night and he came down grumbling about how difficult he'd found it to read. It certainly hasn't got any easier, even with knowing the story well, and my heart sinks when Ruff gets pulled out of the book box.
Timeless Classic from the 'Old Bear' series of books. - Rated
Ruff remains one of our favourites from Ms Hissey, the wonderful storywriter and illustrator. From the famous 'Old Bear' series of harmless 'toys-coming-to-life' stories, which is so important in childhood and sadly missing in most young lives, these days. If the budget can stretch to the audiobook, this is well worth having, also. Narrated, as all Jane Hissey 'Old Bear' books are, by Anton Rodgers, young children love the freedom of following the book and listening at the same time, especially if they have their 'first' cassette or CD player!
