Customer Reviews

Exceptionally beautiful illustrations - and a good story too - Rated 5/5
Many books about dinosaurs which are written for young children are more concerned about having fun pictures and rhyming text than about the accuracy of their portrayal of dinosaurs. Which is fine - except that when your child wants to go beyond cute and colourful beasts there aren't many storybooks to turn to. But this book manages to bring together fact and fiction by crafting a good, dramatic story whilst also paying close attention to the detail of the world of dinosaurs (including hunger, hostility, hunting and killing). It is accesible to young children (it is a solid favourite of my four year) but would appeal to older children too (5 to 10 maybe) for its dramatic (but not too sad or scary) plot. The language is advanced without being complex: it stretches younger children without turning them off - and the scale, colour and beauty of the pictures carries the story along to a satisfying conclusion. With 40 to 60 words per page it is ideal for reading to children, but the text is clear and large enough for the book to be read alone to extend children's reading experience. I have had far more use out of this book already than I expected when I first bought it, and I'm sure it will be a favourite for some time to come.
