Customer Reviews

an absolute must read - Rated 5/5
I must confess that I was somewhat ignorant of the Rwandan genocide despite the fact that it happened when I was in my 20's and the guilt I felt upon reading this book was immense. Dallaire pulls no punches and his book is both horrific and mesmorising in equal measure and at the end you are left wondering how could we possibly have let this happen. In my view this is a must read for everyone - especially in this day and age when it is all too easy to become 'war weary' and only take a passing interest in the daily news stories about tragedies the world over, it really brings home the extent of the human suffering that the more affluent nations allow to go unchecked when there is nothing in it for them in terms of natural resources to be divvied up as the spoils of war.

Too Long - Rated 3/5
This book was extremely tedious to read and just went on and on and on. The writer could have cut it in half but just piled on too much military jargon and diplomatic speak that was repetitive. The story told of the genocide is extremely sad and powerful and some of the horror described in this book will live in your mind for a very long time. Pictures could have been added to give a face to the main players and a scene to this tale of the worst of the worst of humanity. A good read nontheless.

Truly the failure of humanity - Rated 5/5
What a great book. Anyone with any interest in humanity should read it. Really highlights how the west left a nation with no political, strategic or resource value to suffer its fate.

What a great man. A man truly in touch with humanity.

A true hero - Rated 5/5
This book is testamant to a great man who will only inspire you. This is what great books should do in my opinon, inspire all of us to be better.

What is the UN good for? Read this book and you decide. - Rated 5/5
14 years ago, in a small, insignificant Central African republic a war was fought. A war that was totaly ignored by the world. For years The UN would not use the term "genocide" for what happened there...it would not stand to account for its failings. However there were brave men who fought to stop the carnage, to the genocide and the total failue of humanity and this is their story.
I loved this book, it was well written and informative but sometimes it felt as if it was written in "Soldier speak". A part from that small quibble I learnt a lot from it. It is a stunning and lyrical damnation of the politics that keep people from doing the right thing, of an insitution (The UN) who set such high goals for humanity and proceeded to ignore a terrifyingly bleak situation and write it off as a continuation of a civil war to suit their agenda. A strangely up lifting book that makes you thankful someone, somewhere cares enough to make a stand for thoes who can't stand themselves
