A read for children and adults alike - Rated
My daughter aged 11 at the time bought this book on recommendation from school. After she had read it and thoroughly enthused over the story and said 'I MUST READ IT' - I did and I am so glad I did. It is a different perspective of a tragic time in history that should never be forgotten and to bring it to a younger audience in such a way is wonderful.
I loved the book and have read again several times. Each time is enthralling and I always end up crying !
I can't wait for the film coming out soon. I hope it does the book justice.
The contradiction of this book - Rated
It's taken me a while to understand what's wrong with this book. The Holocaust is so deeply frightening that it needs to be explained to children with patience, and over a period of years. This book has no depth to it, and yet it presumes to tackle genocide head on, clumsily, and as little more than a plot device. The characters who die are treated without respect; the Jews in the camp are faceless ciphers. Any reader able to handle the theme of this book also owes it to the memory of those who were murdered to engage with history seriously and sincerely. Viewing the Holocaust through the eyes of the gormless Bruno cheapens the memory of its victims. The jacket blurb says this book about a nine-year-old is not for nine-year-olds: effectively it infantilizes older readers and desensitizes younger readers. Good fiction broadens and deepens our understanding of ourselves and of the world. This self-indulgent caricature reduces the Holocaust to an absolutely banal morality tale.
A truly awful book - Rated
I second all the other poor reviews. It actually makes me sad that people are so enthusiastic about this inane and intellectually dishonest book.
Is Bruno the most idiotic child in literature? - Rated
It's a children's book written from the perspective of possibly the most naive/definitely most stupid child created in literature. The premise of the novel demonstrates a kernel of talent which is washed away by the borderline idiocy of its central character Bruno. As such, the author's intentions are rendered futile.
