Customer Reviews

Definately Page Turning - Rated 5/5
Fantastic - just as good as The Redbreast - if not better in fact. I was reading this on holiday, and could not put it down more often than not. I did not find the references to Oslo off putting at all - there is a map at the front of the book should you need any help working out where things are... but you dont have time for that anyway - you want to keep reading.
Harry Hole - great character - as are the supprting roles - I dont want to say anything too specific relating to the story - I like coming to books totally fresh - but this is a good crime novel. There are several different things going on at once in this book, which I felt was delt with extremely well, not just one especially gripping bit - but a couple. Accelerated heart rate, the lot.
Read it. But you cant have my copy - I've already lent it to someone who will enjoy it just as much as me I imagine.

Definitely too scandinavian... - Rated 2/5
My first problem with this book is that I have never been to Oslo, therefore all the references to different areas in this town left me quite neutral. Also, the rhythm of the book is not always fluent as you would expect from a page-turning thriller. For example, there is a passage where - out of the blue - the main character (Inspector Hole) registers unbearable human screams in the background...it is only a after a few lines that you discover that such screams were in fact the noise of the windscreen wipers...I did not finish this book, and I do not recommend it...but maybe the thing is that this book is just too Nordic for a Mediterranean reader.
