Dark dark dark! - Rated
Fabulously dark comedy about four dwarfs set to play munchkins in the Wizard Of Oz.
I directed this at uni and it's all credit to the writing when you watch the audience reaction as they deliberate between laughing, screaming & throwing up!
Rumours of it coming to London - I can't wait!
Sweet, Dark, Sensational!!! - Rated
I am dying to see this play after reading all the press on it. The book gives a flavour, but I can only imagine what the stage play will be like.
Mindblowing. - Rated
A real tour de force from Welsh and Cavanagh. It's brutally dark but madly funny. It's the flipside to the film, and shows how hard it was for the munchkins to function in such a hothouse enviroment.
Amazing Cult Play. - Rated
I am a big fan of the Wizard of Oz and Babylon Heights tells the story of the munchkins that acted in the movie. I saw "Wicked: The Musical" in NY but Babylon Heights is much better and darker. I'm not a big theatre goer usually, but I had seen all the press about the play and decided to go to Dublin whilst I was in Europe. I wasn't dissapointed.
The set was truly awesome. It gives the illusion that you are actually in that room with the little people. There is a small yellow brick walkway that the actors use to great effect. This is the dark side of Oz and then some.
The actors were out of this world: they fight, frollick and bicker and ultimately leave a big impression on the viewer. The dialogue is very David Mamet-like realistic. The characters constantly talk over each other and try real hard to get their points across.
I think Dean Cavanagh and Irvine Welsh have created something that is going to become a must see. The book gives you a great flavour of the story and is essential if you are planning on seeing the production.
Excellent stuff - Rated
Saw this play in Dublin in August and thought it was excellent.
I have to say I went there with some scepticism, as I had just finished reading his latest novel The Bedroom Secrets of Master Chefs, which I thought was a poor, tired piece of work.
Welsh's creative juices are still flowing (thankfully in a different direction)and this short play centring around four "little people" is both unique and original in its theme, as well as containing excellent drama and characterisation.
