Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favourite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humoured style and colourful, bold illustrations (like those in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Have You Seen My Cat?) have earned him a prominent place in the children's book hall of fame. A delightful book for all the reasons mentioned in other reviews. In addition it is an early lesson in Art Appreciation as the artwork is inspired.

Love the book, but this is a different version.... - Rated
...We bought this book after borrowing it from the library. The end pages of the library book were a monkey, and then children who review all the pages. BUT this version when it arrived had a teacher instead. Which would be wonderful if it were to be read in a classroom, but makes less sense at home. Otherwise, it's a firm favourite - rhythm and rhyme a big hit with the tots and the pictures are bold and colourful.

Two readings and he knew it by heart! - Rated
My 2 year old absolutely loves it. I borrowed it from the library as he seemed to struggle a bit with colours.
I read it twice and the third time, he read it to me. He has been taking it to nursery and read it to the staff there. Definitely on the favourite list at the moment.
When I want him to do something he doesn't want to do, I start chanting the text and he is so pleased telling me the rest that he turns into the most cooperative little boy. But hush... don't tell him!

Essential for budding readers - Rated
My son loves this book and we have read it nearly a hundred times. It is great for developing a child's recognition of colours and animals. The repetition is excellent too for developing speech. Get the board book so they can read/look at it easily by themselves.
