unexpected pleasure - Rated
Like another reviewer I got this as part of a set and couldn't put it down.
Unlike many 'thriller' writers, you can't see quite where he is going with the story and you get the sense that his charcaters are just as suprised by plot developments as you are, a sign of a really good writer that he allows his charcters freedom.
Was very suprised to find out that he was British as would have said it wa by an American writer it was so authentic.
Atmospheric, claustrophobic with an uneasy, unsettling feel to the story and a flawed hero but not int he traditional sense, I now have all his books though this one is one of the best of the four.
Highly recommended if you like thrillers that won't let you go!
A very good read - Rated
I actually got this book in a set of five as a present so I wasn't expecting much but I have to say I was very surprised! This was the authors first book and I have to admit, it showed, but this did not stop me reading it from cover to cover!
This was an excellent first novel that kept me interesed all the way through and once I had finished it I found myself looking for more. I have already ordered the next instalment of Alex Rourke's adventures as a PI. I just hope it lives up to the build up from the first novel.
Overall I would say this is well worth a read and I can guarantee you that while you may not love it, you'll not put it down til you've read it to the end!!
Novelist's Start - Rated
This is the first novel by Rickards and therefore can be forgiven for not being the best book ever. The central premise surrounds Alex Rourke, a former FBI interrogator turned PI. He has been hired by his sheriff friend to crack a case in which the suspect was found standing over the body of a woman. It's just that there is no physical evidence and the man refuses to talk. Can Rourke uncover the truth about the mysterious Nicholas and reveal crimes in the past that have come to haunt the present?
This book is a pleasant and quick read that does not out stay its welcome. For fans of the crime genre there is not much here that has not been done before countless times. Rourke is an interesting central character and as the books develop so might he. I did have some problems with the scenes that felt like dreams as I think these rarely work in fiction.
I would recommend this book to people who have read all of Michael Connelly's books and are looking for something to pass a couple of days. I will certainly read the sequel but the fact that nothing new was offered in the book makes it an average read.
Entertaining but predictably preposterous... - Rated
This is a jolly little thriller which licks along at a good pace and doesn't trouble the reader with too much in the way of deep and meaningful sub-text, social commentary or hidden messages. For a first novel it's impressive, but any reader who is familiar with regular doses of crime/thriller fiction will recognise all the signs of the Big Plot Twist from about 30 pages in. The characters are a touch two-dimensional and the scenarios failed to spook me, or have me spooked on behalf of the hero which is more to the point, but it was an enjoyable read.
I liked it enough to buy the next in the series, to see what hero Alex does next. But if you're used to writers like Jamie Lee Burke or Andrew Vachss or John Sandford then this may well just glide straight past your consciousness without igniting any fires.
It'll serve you well for light holdiay reading, or the kind of book you can enjoy on the train without losing your place every time someone sneezes...
Gripping detective thriller - Rated
Sometimes catching the killer is only the beginning. The advert on the tube station caught my eye. Bought the book at WH Smiths on Victoria Stn. Started to read the book on the journey home. Could not put it down next day. The prologue sets the pace, you can feel the rain lashing down as they make their gruesome discovery. Twists and turns in the plot to keep you guessing until the end. Have already ordered The Touch Of Ghosts.
