This book is an absolute must read for people who like to think they know what the world is all about. Naomi explains how the mindless momentum of free market capitalism has brought violence, upheaval, unemployment and despair to many of the world's people. Her view is that we need more, not less, government intervention in the the markets. This is especially prescient given that the book is written before the start of the current world financial crisis, an event, that has for the first time in the post Keynesian era, seriously impugned the wisdom of untethered laissez faire.
The book is somewhat prolix. The same point once made - and powerfully made - is made over an over again. But this is natural for someone who has 'seen the light' and is keen that others do not miss it. And we had better not miss it.
Also, Naomi, gives too much credit to the "Chicago School" for the turmoil caused by the free market whirlwind. There are many other protagonists who deserve 'credit' for what, in the end, can only be described as undermining the dignity of the human being.

This book covers a very specific macroeconomic theory of Milton Friedman, my main criticism is that this could have been covered in one chapter - it felt like the point was being hammered home again and again. Yes I get it, people in power tend to abuse it, and that when people/economies are in a state of shock they are more open to influence, but you don't need 576 pages to make that point.
However it is an important theory and its prevalence is worryingly on the increase so it's worth a read.
Most important book I ever bought - Rated
The rise of corporate capitalism whose motive is purely to optmize profit despite the human costs is one of the most dominant forces that shaped the America of today. A deeply scary book that every American should read.

This book has to be the most `anti-American capitalist ` book I have ever read. `Truth Justice and the American Way' will ring hollow after reading this book. It adds a new dimension to `the unacceptable face of capitalism'. It is a difficult book to review since it covers such a lot of ground. Some of the events described in the book will trigger vague memories of newspaper stories ; the book will add considerable depth to all the chosen subjects. It basically tries to prove that the American government is just a subsidiary of the American corporate system and the IMF just another political tool for American political arm twisting. Any American company operating offshore which is threatened in any way will get swift retaliation action from the American military; and if that doesn't seem appropriate then the IMF will do the dirty job for them. This has happened over such a long time it cannot just be caused by one particular president etc.; it is clearly ingrained into the American system. Much of the book deals with the American interference and torture in South America. Most of us can remember the Tsunami disaster appeals for aid; well this book will tell you what happened to your donation (it makes pretty sick reading ). If you are one of the multitude who wonders just what the hell is going on in Iraq; this book will fill you in on lots of detail. This book won't make you an expert on the chosen subjects since the detain given is chosen to shock the reader. Conspiracy theorists could have a field day with the information given in this book
Ever wondered why America cosy up to so many dictators; probably because they destroyed the democratic government and installed the dictator. When the American government or economists praise a country for the wonderfully successful economy ; that will be because half the population are living below the breadline and the majority of the workers are unemployed. This book makes pretty sick reading. It will help you understand why there are so many people in the world who hate America.. it's not all envy. As you sit in your nice warm house eating your doughnut and drinking your coffee; this book should help you realise how lucky you are.... at the moment... you could be next for the shock treatment.

This book really makes you think about the dark side of capitalism and how it benefits only the select few.
