Customer Reviews

Excellent - Rated 4/5
Arrived on time. Unfortunately, some of the pages in the book had not been print been printed properly. Too lazy to bother to return.

The 20th Century's Man of Letters - Rated 5/5
John Updike has been called the greatest American writer of the second half of the 20th century (the only real competition coming in the not inconsiderable form of Philip Roth) and while he is justly famous for his numerous novels and short-stories there was actually much more to Updike. This excellent book illustrates that Updike was, indeed, a man of letters and his interests were fairly catholic - art, travel, literary criticism, cars, poker and, of course, sex - it's all here. I particularly enjoyed the comments on other writers, where Updike comes across as erudite, interested and sensitive (unlike other writers I can think of).

On the back cover of my copy is a quote from Martin Amis: "Alert, funny sensuous. Here is a writer who can do more or less as he likes" and, he might have added, does it very well indeed. Or perhaps that simply goes without saying.

Highly recommended.
