Customer Reviews

A Good Present - Rated 4/5
This item was purchased as a present and has gone down well. The author is so descriptive and passionate about wood, which does not sound exciting but comes across extremeley well

Notes from Walnut Tree Farm - Rated 4/5
For anyone who has enjoyed Deakin's Waterlog and Wildwood, Walnut Tree Farm is a must, perhaps because it is not finely crafted like those two books, being just not too self-conscious jottings. These notes are a better insight into the man himself.

Deakin's Village - Rated 4/5
I live in Mellis, Roger Deakin's home for many years before his premature death. I had read Waterlogged, indeed I had a copy but it had gone missing. When I saw the three books on offer I jumped at them as I hadn't read the last one 'Notes from Walnut Tree farm'. The service was amazing, they turned up the next morning, less than 24 hours after ordering.
The 'Notes from Walnet Tree Farm' are a fascinating read. Idiosyncratic and giving a wonderful picture of living close to nature. While I share his passion for swimming I cannot emulate his practice of swimming in his moat! Too many creatures for comfort! A great read.

The Pleasure of His Company - Rated 4/5
Here is an absorbing posthumous autobiography by an extrordinary man. Please don't think it's a retrograde step reading 'Notes'after his 'Waterlog' and 'Wildwood'. Far from it. His publisher, Hamish Hamilton, despite my initial cynicism in thinking the book would be a cold meal of stale leftovers, has served Deakin and his readers well in getting this book up on its legs.
Deakin isn't afraid of intimacy on the page and he drew me in through the gate, past the tree (what a cover!)and into his physical and interior life without my noticing what had happened until I turned another page and there was no more.

A touching remembrance of Roger Deakin - Rated 4/5
Roger Deakin's notebooks have been lovingly put together into a year's diary. It is just that - observations, memories, comments - full of wisdom, knowledge and demonstrating his overwhelming love of the natural world around him. His sad, untimely death makes this book something really to be cherished.
