Courtesy of Teens Read Too - Rated 4/5
Jody is a young boy whose father buys him a horse. He instantly falls in love with the horse and vows to take good care of it. He names the horse Galiban and the ranch hand, Billy Buck, helps Jody train him.

Then one night there is a cold rain storm and Billy forgets to go out and put a blanket over his horse. When Billy and Jody go to see him the next morning he has a bad cold. And over the next few days he only gets sicker and sicker. On about the fourth day, Jody wakes in the middle of the night and knows something is horribly wrong.

He runs out to the barn and Galiban is gone.

This is a good story and has a lot of meaning. Jody goes through a right of passage in this book and the reader can slowly watch him progress from a boy to a man. Easy, insightful read.

This has got to be the crappest book ever! The book will easily make you fall asleep and you will want to burn it in hell! john Steinbeck - get a life!
it is about a eleven year old boy living in Salinas Vally.he gets a pony and names it gabilan and then it soon dies. he takes it all out on the farm guy i forget his name as it is so crap).

Well written and very touching. - Rated 4/5
The Red pony is a story of a boy and the pony he is given and subsequently dies, that is essentially the story. However the greatness of this book, as is so often the case with Steinbeck is not the story but the writing, and this is written well, very well in fact. With a fairly limited storyline Steinbeck has to rely on his writing ability as he so often does with the likes of the Wayward Bus, Cannery Row and even to a certain extent East of Eden and the Pullitzer winning Grapes of Wrath. It his undeniable that Steinbeck is one of the most important authors of the 20th century but still his lesser known works go largely unnoticed, it is also true that works such as the Red Pony have a place in our society and should be enjoyed a great deal more than they are. Naturally, when considering the other works that Steinbeck has sculpted it is understandable if some others fall by the wayside but the Red Pony should not be one of them. It is short and concise and should you be looking for something to fill a rainy afternoon and can't bring yourself to go to the video rental store then this is the book you should be reading.

Not in the same class as his other work - Rated 3/5
After reading the staggering Grapes of Wrath I wanted to find out more about Steinbeck. I bought a collection of his short novels which included The Pearl, Mice and Men and this one, The Red Pony. To be honest I thought it was not nearly as good as the others. It seemed bitty, with no direction, brutal in several places. I guess there were the same lessons etc running through it as his other work, but I did not think it had the same impact. The other two I mention above were each far better in my opinion. But hey, anything is going to have troubles when compared to Grapes.
