Lovecraft's genius introduced by S.T. Joshi - Rated
After reading H.P. Lovecraft's first anthology of tales , compiled by S.T. Joshi into the book " The Call of Chtulhu and other weird stories , " I became fond of the peculiarity of H.P. Lovecraft's tales , and I chose to look into further reading .
This anthology consists of thirteen tales and includes a detailed introduction by S.T. Joshi , a freelance writer who edited Lovercraft's collected fiction as well as some of Lovecraft's essays and miscellaneous writings ; and also, at the end of the book , there is a minutely written explanatory notes section in which S.T. Joshi describes - and clarifies - parts of each tale that may be liable to arouse confusion in the reader . In the explanatory notes section , Joshi points out the idiosyncrasies between Lovercraft's tales as well as the origin , the social events around which Lovecrafct set his tales ; furthermore, he provides a blow-by-blow explanation for certain appellations used by the author in his tales , appellations that may have held influence upon the way the author depicted his characters as well as the socio-political factors that affected Lovecraft's life from his youth spent in Providence , Rhode Island , to the most abhorred years of his life spent in New York City - a city that Lovecaft loathed as he considered it amorphous and corrupted .
At the beginning of this review ,I defined H. P . Lovecraft's tales very peculiar for one reason : Lovecraft tales consider a distinct kind of horror .This category strays from the more classical horror populated by witches and apparitions, and converges on a concoction of the then-emerging science-fiction and the grotesque of which Lovecraft was a prolific writer of weird tales for magazines . This combination can be traced in Lovecraft's tales in themes such as human madness and the hypothetical existence of an alien race that had lived for years sunken into the depth of the Pacific Ocean .The latter theme can be found into this anthology in the story " At the Mountains of Madness . "
In conclusion , I would like to leave they who will have the opportunity to read my review with one recommendation : to wholly enjoy Lovecraft's thirteen tales contained in this anthology , one should be reading the explanatory notes alongside each correlated tale . In my opinion , reading each tale with the aid of the notes makes it possible for a reader to understand certain points that might have remained obscure if it hadn't been for S.T. Josh's devoted expository work .
The orignal and only master - Rated
Not only is Lovecraft the orignal master of the horror genre, to my mind he is among the greatest authors of all time. I can't explain quite how appealing his work is, but among other characteristics it is his style of thoroughness. He never leaves a loose end or an unexplained point. His is methodical and full. A writer really in touch with his imagination, his work comes across with the feel of an unlimited universe to which the reader is invited, if they dare. I go back to his stories over and over again. Many critics talk of his early death and connect it with his imagination and an all too real link with the dark world about which he writes...maybe so, maybe not. But for sure his death was all too early because I believe his best was yet to come. You will not be dissapointed with this work whether or not you are a fan of horror or just a fan of good writing.
