When Luke gets cancer it seems to Colin that it is just another way of his little brother trying to get attention. But when Colin is sent to England he hatches a plot that will really make his mum and dad sit up and take notice. If he can just get to the Queen to ask if he can borrow the best doctor in the country then all will be well.

Two Weeks With the Queen is a delight from beginning to end, and brilliantly combines comedy and tragedy as Colin embarks on his hilarious mission. The reluctance of adults to discuss Luke's illness is incredibly well observed, and Colin's dream of resolving his family's problems and becoming the hero of the piece is dealt with so tenderly amid the laugh-out-loud comedy that it is nigh on impossible not to shed a tear. A brilliant book from Australia's best-loved children's author. --Susan Harrison

Customer Reviews

One of the best stories I've ever read - Rated 5/5
This book is quite simply one of the best stories I've ever read - whether that's written for children or for adults. Morris Gleitzman is an outstanding storyteller - he is expert at balancing serious issues with the need to make the story enjoyable and up-beat. The story is very sad - the hero's brother is dying and he's determined to find a cure. I had harboured hopes of reading this to my class, but as I couldn't even read it in my head without blubbing hopelessly there's no chance of reading it aloud to anyone! What I love about this story is that even though it has a very sad theme it is so outrageously funny that as much as I cried I also chuckled and snorted. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good read with pathos, humour and a feisty hero who never gives up.

very very sad - Rated 5/5
I must have read TWO WEEKS WITH THE QUEEN about 6 years ago now (I was about 10) and where I might have forgotten details of the plot and the names of some of the characters it's still a book that I remember and love.

It has a strong, charismatic and honest main character (Colin) that's little brother is currently dying of cancer. He is sent away to England, as his parents think it will be less stressful than watching his brother die. Colin resolves to find the Queen's own doctor and cure his little brother. On the way he meets a gay man who's lover is also dying. A strong friendship begins as they each face the worst.

It's a story with relationships, love, death, prejudice, terminal diseases and hope. Told with humour and honesty through the eyes of a young boy just trying to save his brother.

A must read for anyone.

Essential reading for 10-15 year olds...a fantastic book - Rated 5/5
It is difficult to praise this book enough. Colin is an extremely likeable young narrator with an admirable sense of determination and resourcefulness. His various escapades (including an attempt at breaking into Buckinham Palace to speak personally with the Queen) are hilarious and memorable, and yet there are moments in this book that are completely heart-rending.

Gleitzman writes in such a way as to make the plot seem believable, exposing the reader to some of the harsh realities of life, with an important overall message about realising what is important, and keeping hope against all the odds. This book contains so much more than a basic plot, and Colin's eternal optimism and resourcefulness proves infective to the reader.

A good Read - Rated 5/5
Two weeks with the queen is an exelent book! I can remember reading this book at school and it was an amazing read.
I recomend this book to anyone at the age of 11-16years.

iIt is a brilliant book - Rated 5/5
Two Weeks With The Queen Two Weeks With The Queen is an exelent book and a very exiting read,I thourugly engoyed it although there were a fiew sad parts. The main carachter is called Collin and he has got a brother whos name is Luke. Colin is quite babyish, and always wants his own way.All hell breakes loose when Collin doesn't get a micro scope for christmas but a pair of daggy boots. The language in Two Weeks With The Queen is not very propper, there are allot of slang and a fiew Australien words e.g daggy, dunny. My favorite part is when Collin and Luke play cricket with the nurses in the hospital and when Colin lets the air out of the nurses tyres. I thought that Two Weeks With The Queen is a brilliant book and I would definatley recomend it
