Nevermore! - Rated 4/5
I used to read the stories about Arabel's raven when I was a child and have extremely fond memories of Bernard Cribbins reading them on Jackanory. I thought they had gone out of print and was disappointed because I really wanted to read them with my kids. Luckily they have been reprinted and it's well worth the effort tracking them down.

Mortimer is Arabel's raven and he is an exceedingly naughty and bad tempered bird. He develops obsessions which he must fulfil at all costs, despite the mayhem they invariably bring to those around him. Arabel is his owner, but has tenuous control over him, and is usually involved in cleaning up his mess and loving him anyway.

In this collection of stories Mortimer goes on a cruise ship, foils a zoo robbery and discovers Excalibur in the process of driving a runaway lawnmower. The book is superbly illustrated by Quentin Blake who adds to the devilish nature of Mortimer brilliantly.

These are funny stories and made my children (and me) roar with laughter. My one regret is that they have dated quite a bit since those halcyon days of the nineteen seventies and I found myself having to explain a fair few things. As such I would recommend them for six and up to diminish the number of times you have to spend explaining stuff.
