The best introduction to Wittgenstein - Rated 5/5
I read this book ages ago (and am now rereading it), and it was the first book I'd ever read on Wittgenstein. Very occasionally, you get a theology/philosophy book which is "unputdownable". This is one of them. Kerr writes very clearly, and he offers both a very good critical introduction to Wittgenstein and surrounding literature, and a theological project (or a set of theological projects) in the Wittgensteinian tradition. In the book, Kerr shows how Wittgenstein can be useful in considering questions about faith and reason, the nature of the soul and the "inner life", questions in moral theology, and much more. Apart from this relevance to theological questions, Kerr also (and this is what raises the book from an ordinarily good book, into a classic) gives a brilliant insight into the Wittgenstein's "fundamentally religious point of view." Added to all this, Kerr is one of those people who has read just about everything related, from Aquinas to Peter Winch, from 20th century English Analytical Philosophy, to Continental philosophy and theology. So, this book is worth reading as a good introduction to Wittgenstein, a good overview of an extraordinarily large range of the theological and philosophical projects surrounding Wittgenstein, and a very good essay in its own right in "doing" theology.

Excellent introduction to Wittgenstein - Rated 4/5
In a way, it is a pity that the title of this book includes the word "theology" as this will put non-theologians off buying it, when it contains one of the best short introductions to Wittgenstein available anywhere. The book is clear and well-written, by someone with an enviable knowledge not only of Wittgenstein but also of theology. The first edition was criticised, with some justification, for being a bit light theologically, but Kerr has added a postscript which addresses this problem, at least to some extent. As theologians, we could all do with being more philosophically adept, and this volume shows one of Scotland's great theologians grappling with an important philosophical tradition. If you have any interest in Wittgenstein at all, or in the relationship of philosophy and theology, you should buy this book.
