sympathetic marxist account of methodism - Rated This is a thoughtfully written book for those of you who have already read about Methodism and want to get a more rounded picture. Hempton draws on a great range of original sources to paint a vivid picture of different aspects of Methodism from the hymn-singing to death-bed conversions, from the salary of an itinerant preacher to the indigenous mission stories. It makes me want to go back to the original sources such as John Wesley's complete works and also the sermons available. What's remarkable about Methodism is how people were kept on track in their faith through classes, bands, gatherings, love feasts etc. Make no mistake, Hempton's account is scholarly, and if you just want to get to know John Wesley better, you should read a biography of him instead. Highly recommended for the notes and bibliography alone.
