A Christian Must Read? - Rated
I have often wondered whether there is a book that every Christian ought to read other than the bible, and at last have found one that might actually be it. Yancey’s book is warm, challenging, encouraging and engaging. I couldn’t put it down. The book is constructed around a series of poignantly retold biblical parables and personal experiences. I believe that is its greatest strength. Yancey opens himself up in these retellings, taking risks by sharing his Christian experience. Yancey deserves credit for such openness. If only we were all so open, perhaps we would judge less.
Weaknesses? I feel there is one key issue outstanding in this study and that is the question of church discipline. Yancey argues strongly for a compassionate stance towards the world, but there are times when the New testament calls for extremely strong medicine in the treatment of sin. How is this integrated into his thought? I never found out.
So buy it! Why? Because if we all lived this way the church would look so much like Jesus that "tax collectors and sinners" would start flooding in.
