A new look at ancient writings - Rated
I bought this book at our church book store while having tea with some friends in the cafe - all of us are 60 and above and we thoroughly enjoyed this reworking of the Bible. It's fresh as well as humerous but none the less puts the point over very well. For instance "shepherds on a hill looking after sheep" become "the sheep security team"!
We all loved the book and sometimes it really is good to look outside the box
at a different way of putting things.
I highly recommend you buy it - one for everyone of all ages to enjoy.
Sorry sorry sorry, Mr Rob - Rated
Eep. The other 2 reviewers have given this 5 stars, so now I'm wondering if I'm missing something.
There's no doubt, this is an informative book. But - and, honestly, it's a big 'un - do NOT give this to teenagers in the hope it'll spark their interest. The yoot of today have a vernacular that us grown ups can't even begin to fathom, much less write in, and this book is filled with "old skool" terms and phrases which'll have teenagers rolling their eyes. Look, realistically, teachers who try to fit in and speak on a level with kids invariably end up being the least effective, and certainly the most ridiculed. At any rate, the kids tend not to learn as much cos they're too busy tutting at the teacher. Unfortunately, this book is much the same.
In fact, it's so clogged with "yoot speak" it's slightly hard to read. It's so cool that someone has done this, and it must've taken years, but at some points, it's almost like Mr Rob has put a word or phrase into Microsoft Word Thesaurus (you know how random it can be) and picked the yoofiest sounding variant, regardless of how it works in context.
However, if you're already studying the bible, and you want something easily pick-up and put-downable where you can look up the odd verse here and there, this isn't a bad book to have on your shelf.
Cutting Edge Christianity - Rated
This book brings a fresh and vibrant new feel to the stories we know so well from the bible. Very often the very familiarity can make their reading stale, but this book brings it to life. I have used excerpts from it to read to unchurched youngsters and it has made a real impact. They like the style and the reality of the words. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to take a fresh look at the scriptures and really feel them again.
Vibrant, real and pulls no punches - Rated
Rob Lacey says this 'isn't the bible with a capital B' - but it is a vibrant, modern re-write of the Bible suitable for getting an alternative impression of what the bible writers were trying to say. I would not use it for scholarly study, but it's very readable - almost 'un-putdownable'. I think it would be great for teenagers and those who would like a new paraphrase version.
