Uninspiring and overcomplicated - Rated
Having already used After Effects 7 Hands On Training by Chad Fahs and Lynda Weinman, I still fealt underprepared and so swapped text books with a friend. Unfortunately what I got in return for my dog eared bible, which is a pretty good introduction to this complex subject, was Adobe After Effects 7.0 Classroom in a Book. It's basically convoluted, disorganized and dull. Far from reinforcing what I thought I already knew, it complicated things further for me, leaving me baffled by it's wordy explanations and lack of compassion for the novice. Also, I swear some of those examples don't work. Either that or my copy of ae is playing up or indeed I'm stupid, which Im prepared to conceed. Even so this book doesn't cater for the many of us who will inevitably get in a tangle whilst mastering the basics.
Dull examples and in need of re-printing - Rated
I know that we all learn in different ways but this book has not helped me learn the basics about after effects.
For one, the examples given to work on are dull, look dated and do not help to demonstrate the capabilities of the software.
Secondly, the book simply gives you instructions to follow without explaining at all well what it is you are doing. It seems to take for granted that we all know what "alpha channels" are - er no.
Lastly, the book is printed incorrectly with almost a whole chapter missing! Hopefully more recent versions of this book have had this problem corrected.
I know that after effects is aimed at the professional so maybe I am not doing the book justice. But if you are like me, a novice that is looking into getting involved with digital video editing then I think there are probably better guides out there.
