Chasing Redbird is one of Sharon Creech's four novels written for children including the earlier prizewinning Walk Two Moons. In Chasing Redbird Creech's magnificent storytelling evokes the wilderness of the Kentucky countryside where bears and snakes and the thick undergrowth of an overgrown trail both challenges the young 13-year-old Zinny to solitary adventure and gives her the mental and physical space to deal with her repressed feelings about the death of her cousin when she was a toddler and with the very recent death of her dearly beloved mother-surrogate, "Redbird" aunt Jessie. As well as learning to face the painful fact of death, the novel is also about growing up, and coming to terms with the fears and hopes of adolescence and burgeoning sexuality. This is a stirring adventure story at the same time as being a deeply moving one. It is bound to win the hearts of younger teens. --Tamsin Palmer

Customer Reviews

Another great book! - Rated 5/5
You might have seen my other reviews, and I love Sharon Creech! Her books are great, and true to form, this one was no exception.

A girl finds a mysterious trail, and she spends ages clearing the path - all 20 miles of it! She discovers lots of things she never even knew!

I like the way that this ties in with Walk Two Moons (the main character lived where this book was set - Bybanks) and Absolutely Normal Chaos (Sal from Walk Two Moons lived in Bybanks, and moved to where Mary Lou lives! Quite confusing, but unique!

Wonderful sequal to Walk Two Moons. Real and "down to earth" - Rated 5/5
Its a great book to read if you enjoy adventure and like a book of mixed emotions. It made me cry, laugh, and think. Sharon Creech is a wonderful author. Her books all tell real life stories that I can personally relate to in some ways. I loved reading about Zinnys dream to accomplish uncovering the trail. This book doesnt only explain different situations, it is a real page turner. I couldnt put it down until I was done with it. Aslong as youve got the time, I reccomend for anyone able to read and comprehend, to read this book emidiatly. Dont pass up the opportunity.

Very interesting, yet a little confusing - Rated 4/5
I really enjoyed the story of how Zinnia deals with all the problems in her life, such as the death of her aunt and uncovering a hidden wagon trail. Very intriging!

Okay, quite a good book - Rated 3/5
If you have read the excellent Walk Two Moons you will probably like this book, but I found it to be not as interesting as Walk Two Moons and it drags on a lot. The ending is quite good though and it's a really nice book

Just Fabulous, and YOU should read it. - Rated 5/5
This book was just like "Walk Two Moons". People who loved "Walk Two Moons" and Sal Hiddle will love THIS. The book is about Zinny Taylor and this trail she finds. I liked Zinny because she's funny and sweet, (not to mention that she's also a lot like Sal Hiddle) and the story was fab. I loved this story, and now this is added to my "Favorite" list. This book is really great, and if you don't read it,....... You're missing all the fun!
