This novel was a treat to read; we are led by an expert guide into a funny, all-too-human world of muddle, good intentions, minor disasters, emotional upheaval, all of it seen in a light that is both compassionate and satirical.
Charlotte Mendelson continues to produce novels that achieve this fusion, always in captivating settings and with carefully layered insights. I await the next one...
Superb, accomplished, funny and moving novel - Rated
It's rare these days to read such an accomplished novel. WWWB is witty and full of strong, memorable characters. And unlike many contemporary novels which start strong and peter out this one builds and builds and becomes even more engaging and gripping in the last third. My wife and I both read it through very quickly and have already begun her previous novels as a result. Here's hoping the still very young - she's only 35! - Charlotte Mendelson continues to produce such wonderful novels.
A beautifully written book that is BOTH funny and touching - Rated
I really enjoyed this book. It pulls off what must be the very difficult trick of being both very funny AND touching at the same time, and the plot is excellent.
Practically every line has something witty and wrily oblique, in a throwaway fashion that does not jar. You just smile or laugh aloud in recognition of the foibles of humanity. It happens to be about the partial disintegration of a female rabbi's family - or perhaps their (at least partial) emancipation: but you do not have to be Jewish to understand what is going on or to enjoy it. It is written with empathy for the plight of the various actors and the roles they have been given by life or have chosen for themselves. She also weaves together with great skill the voices and stories of several protagonists, male and female alike. The way that she does it keeps you wondering what happens next, and so carries the story forward.
It does not often happen to me that I am really sorry when I get to the end of a book. This is one of them. I strongly recommend it.
