It's extremely clear with a wonderful CD-Rom! - Rated
The Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners with CD-Rom has the most useful features of three products put together, i.e. the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary, the Cambridge Pronouncing Dictionary and the Collins Cobuild Advanced Learner's English Dictionary, three books with CD-Rom which I use and love. Let me explain its wonderful features in detail: Like the Collins Cobuild, both the book and the CD-Rom offer the reader the chance to see the most used words in the English language by means of one to three red stars printed next to them. At the end of the book you have a list of these words to check your level of knowledge. The CD-Rom is easy to install and once the software is saved onto your hard disk, you won't need to have it in your computer drive any more. Once the software is installed, you can take the Guided Tour to study its features or just start using it. Like the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary, you have two loudspeakers - a red one for the British pronunciation and a blue one for the American pronunciation - and IPA transcriptions for each entry. Very useful are the red stars showing you the most used words in the language. If you want to practice your pronunciation, just click the "pronunciation" menu, and you will be able to compare your recordings with the British and American ones. Very interesting is the presence of the "SoundSearch" menu, very similar to the Cambridge Pronouncing Dictionary features - you have a list of IPA symbols and by clicking on them you can hear the sounds, but at the same time you insert the IPA symbols in the searching path in order to create an IPA transcription. Really useful for those foreign languages university students who need some lists of words having the same sound. The feature I'm sure you will enjoy is the QuickFind, which works perfectly as in the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. You just point the mouse at a word in a Word document or on a webpage text and the dictionary speaks up its sound for you, while a small window shows you the two loudspeakers with both American and British pronunciation and IPA transcriptions as well as the word's meaning. No more wasted time for those foreign languages university students who are going to prepare for their oral exam! To return to the normal dictionary window, just click on "full". Both in the paper dictionary and in the software there are thousands illustrations to help you understand the language, you can also create wordlists and print them, add personal notes, study the "Study Pages" and Atlas maps as well! Highly recommended to all languages lovers and particularly to foreign languages university students.
Macmillan english dictionary -ultimate joy - Rated
The market is glut with EFL dictionaries and it is a difficult choice for a learner of English who may be looking for a dictionary that can handle his queries.I have recently bought four english language dictionaries specifically written for learners because I am working on a bilingual dictionary.I had the opportunity to compare the various features of these dictionaries from a learner's standpoint.I must acknowledge that Macmillan have produced something unique in the sense that it identifies crucial vocabulary for a serious learner of English.Besides it is very comprehensive and up-to-date.If you dont believe it just open the entry word " Zap" or "knock".I am sure it will zap its rivals and you can buy at a "Knock-off" price from Amazon. One more thing! The accompanying CD is more of a joy and you can play with words if you are a dicionary "geek".It also gives you free internet access to the full content of Macmillan dictionary. Therefore you need not buy book and CD package, just buy the book and enjoy the elctronic version but it lacks certain features specific to CD ROM version.I strongly recommend it to intermediate and advanced learners alike.
