Customer Reviews

astouding, brilliant, raw, funny, touching. - Rated 5/5
Astounding, brutal, brilliant prose. I can't rave enough about this book. Can be hard reading and make you feel shocked and was really not what I was expecting.. it's much better than i ever thought it would be. Never thought she was a genius before, more a celebrity, but I'm now converted. A must read, even if you weren't really interested in her before. Funny too at times. tracey Emin is not just an artist. This woman can really write.Strangeland

A good read, Very Interesting. - Rated 5/5
This book is a very interesting read and although at times disturbing its gives you an insight into the mind Tracy Emin. A great book if you want to know more about her and why she is the way she is.

A wonderful journey - Rated 4/5
Like many, I never knew much about Emin apart from what was portrayed in the media. This beautiful memoir, recorded in capsule memories and feelings, is wonderful.

Interesting and funny - the book, and Tracey herself! - Rated 5/5
I guess, whether you like a biography or not, has much to do with your sympathy (or antipathy) for the person in question. That said, I didn't know much about Tracey Emin before reading this, apart from her appearances in life-style magazines etc. But - as expected - she's a very sympathetic and interesting person - the kind you'd like to know personally. She's a gift to all of us - talented, witty, honest.
The book is different from so many bio's in that it is not boringly long, but rather short and concise - still, Tracey gets around so many different aspects of her life. You really don't feel she's hiding anything from you - but despite her openness, it's still easy to respect her! :-)

Read it!

Beautiful - Rated 5/5
Having been a fan of Emin's work for some time, I was delighted when I came across this book on a visit to the Tate. The writing is as honest and shocking as her mono prints and as haunting and honest as her bed, tents and short films.
The book is set up into 3 parts, the first 'Motherland' is about Emins childhood and growing up in Margate, her rape and her promiscuity at such a young age. This is perhaps the most heartbreaking part of the book, it shows so much of her haunted childhood and really puts you in the time and place of a gritty Margate with Tracey as she overcame very difficult obstacles.
The second part 'Fatherland' is more of twenty something Tracey living in Turkey with her father, exploring her heritage and some great, humorous anectdotes and advice.
The third and final instalment is called 'Traceyland' and is perhaps the most intriguing part of the book. It details her drug and drink abuse, her heartwrenching stories of falling pregnant and abortions and even the guide to making the perfect hangoveer cure.
This book is truely beautiful. Amazingly honest and open, everything you would expect from Emin and even more.
