Good core messages, watch out for that corn! - Rated
A good book with good core messages. These messages are generally about how to motivate a team to create a high performace team. The book contains various easy to implement ideas about getting more performance from your team. The book is written in a storybook style rather than textboook style, making it very easy (and quick) to read. The book is corny in places. Many people you work with each day will have read this book - only by reading it yourself will you be able to understand what they are talking about when they talk about the book.
Yet another way for managers to make the staff's life a living hell. - Rated
Yes, that's right, the way to improve your staff's morale is to treat them like a bunch of 12 year olds... "You chose your attitude" is simply a way for management to blame disgruntled employees for their own poor management. The suggestion to make your work "FUN", when some work that needs doing simply ISN'T "FUN", is the most patronising thing I've ever heard.
This stuff is dangerous in the hands of impressionable and immature people such as management!
Hmmmm........... - Rated
Ok, good ideas, great concepts of how workplaces should be and ways to achieve the desired morale boost, but its knee deep in cheese. Great piles of brie, mountains of gouda. I nearly vomited at its corny story, almost choked on the poetry bit. Please someone condense it down to a 20 page wonder.
Not Hooked - Rated
Just as well this is a quick read. The basic premise is OK but it has been explored far better in other books. For my money the old-skool "The Magic of Thinking Big" is a far better buy if you are after practical inspiration. As for this being an a message snuck under our radar in the guise of an engrossing story I disagree. Its fourth rate US soaked cheese that would better grace the pages of some lightweight women's weekly. I am very open minded when it comes to self-help books (they do help!) but the clumsy, faux-feelgood, sacharine nature of this one actually made me feel cynical! Not the desired effect! ! And the less said about the "inspirational" poetry shamelessly plugged within, the better. Oy vay. I wanted to like this. But sorry, this is clearly selling on hype, and feels very much like a "product" constructed by someone in a suit who wants our money. Plus....I still feel sorry for poor dead forgotten Dan!
A philosophy that has worked for my company - Rated
Fish! A strange name, but a perfect must for any working soul. Donald Mitchell reviewed Fish and mentioned structure and asked, "How can it make sense for business people in suits to go to a market and catch fish being thrown at them?" Well, I think maybe Donald missed the point, I felt that the point was "don't let wearing a suit let you miss out on some fun, dare to throw the fish, dare to catch it, the chances are whatever the outcome, fish caught, fish dropped, you will have enjoyed the experience. Also, Donald mentioned that if you don't know Seattle or the Market it may not make much sense, I live in Hampshire, England and it worked. Fish is a MUST READ, whether you employ, are employed, or even unemployed this little gem is worth every penny. Enjoy your life by choosing your attitude and seeing the fun in everyday life. Fish! is at the core of my company, everything we do is done to make someones day, and we love it!
