Gripping but very nasty - Rated
This is a very good book but also very disturbing. I found the whole idea of what The Stranger did to Sarah truly horrific, which I know is the whole point of the story, so it obviously works well because it's vile and cruel beyond belief. I thought the worst part of it was the bit where Sarah's parents die, this was unbelievably horrible, I was physically flinching as I read it, in fact my daughter asked me what the matter was. Not that that part is particularly gruesome, just the terrible things her mother in particular had to do, and thinking about yourself in her position, it's truly disturbing. I also found the Kingsley murder scene rather gory, I'm a bit squeamish, and don't like all the grisly details.
BUT it is compulsively readable, a real page turner, and as it's the first by this author that I have read, I will be reading the other in this series, Shadow Man, soon. In all, a riveting, gripping, excellent but very unpleasant thriller.
FANTASTIC MORE PLEASE - Rated
What a super author, wonderful use of the English language. This book and the previous one Shadow Man unearths all your hidden emotions. I cannot wait for the next novel which is due out soon. An excellent literary experience.
McFadyen has done it again. - Rated
Since reading McFadyens first book 'Shadow Man' about a year ago I've been eagerly anticipating 'The Face of Death'. I didnt think it could be as good as his first book but this is definately better. The crimes are so clever and calculating and definately brutal. It's told in 2 stories really, 1 angle being Agent Smoky Barrett and the other being the story of Sarah Kingsley told through her diary.
The characters really are the driving force in McFadyens books. He has an undeniable talent of making the readers really care for the characters and making them so lifelike and real. This book really is great, well worth the read but make sure you read Shadow Man first.
Absolutly fantastic!!!!!!! But read Shadow Man first! - Rated
I never thought i'd find an author better than Mark Billingham, but my god this one's done it.. big time! This book is absolutly fantastic!! But once you've read it, you'll probably want to read the other one, so i'd suggest doing it in the right order and reading Shadow Man first (which is also brilliant!!!).
i wont say anything about the plot - wouldnt want to give it away, but as with the first book, this has the ability to make you cry and also scare the pants of you! You'll go to read a chapter before bed and grudgingly put the book down when you realise its 3am and you've been reading non-stop for 4 hours... you'll finish it tommoro!
Obviously everyones different and likes different things (though i dont think anyone could not like this book!) so other authors I like are Mark Billingham and Peter James. I didnt like Stephen Booth. Hope that helps, but even if you're vice versa on my faves, i'd still suggest reading this book to you, and anyone else who'll listen!!!
Enjoy!
