Customer Reviews

A brilliant concept - Rated 5/5
It wasn't difficult to see that email.Jesus@bethlehem screamed for a sequel but the pressure on authors to come up with something better can often be difficult. Hilary Robinson is not an author to doubt. Her vision of how Jesus might be received today translated through trial by media and appropriate modern day symbolism will make a huge contribution, not only to the RE curriculum but to storysharing too. I heard her interviewed recently and it is clear she has a unique ability to put over the most complex ideas in a concise, sensitive and appealing way. She deserves to do well.

e-mail:Jesus@Bethlehem - Rated 5/5
An excellent book for Christmas. It gives a different slant to the usual Christmas story and brings it right up to date. My children loved it and it gave them plenty to talk about.

Powerful, poignant and imaginative - Rated 5/5
Hilary Robinson's talent lies in the depth beneath the wit. Rather than using yards of description and dialogue she allows the pictures to do the talking whilst reinforcing the images with carefully constructed narrative. The idea is inspired and the text is simple and direct. email.Jesus@Bethlehem brings a traditional story right up to date so that young children can recognise the remarkable events in a current context. The telling of this story is relevant to everyone whatever their ethnicity or faith and therein lies another of the book's qualities - it can be absorbed on many different levels.

2,000 years on ... The Christmas Story re-invented ! - Rated 5/5
Ever tried explaning Frankincense to a four year old ? .... Are you even really sure what it is yourself. Sometimes the greatest story ever told just doesn't work that well for children of the of the 21st Century. For youngsters brought up with "Gameboy", "Furby" and "Telly Tubbies" appreciation of lowing cattle, westward leading stars, kings on camels and babies in mangers comes hard.

Hilary Robinson dares to ask the question, "What if Jesus was born today?". That leads to an inspired vision for the Christmas Story. Its really a tale about communication. Angellic appearance and Stars of Bethlehem make way for Satellite television and the Internet. The media may be different, but the message remains true.

If you want your children to really understand the images of Christmas, looking beyond Santa and Snowmen, spend some of your E-cash on this book.

If, as a parent, you can't crack a small smile at the 3 Kings trying to get Myrhh Aromatherapy Baby Oil passed the Israeli customs, I'll eat my modem.
