Some great art and story telling, but make sure it's the right edition for you! - Rated
Work out what you want from this book before you buy it as other editions may better suit your needs.
In this version you get a short 'manga' comic book adaptation of the last quarter of the bible, an interview with the creators of the comic and the full NIV text of the New Testament (generally regarded as the most accurate english translation availible).
The 'manga' covers the main events from the life of Jesus, the disciples and the early Christian church as it spread during the 1st century. Each page features side bars telling you exactly where to find the story in the bible, these make a very useful teaching aid. The art style is energetic and some of the panels are very impressive.
Calling it 'Manga' is a bit cheeky, the artists are British and not Japanese and they do not describe their own work as manga in the included interview. Hardcore manga fans may be dissappointed. However, the art is excellent and the stories are told with style and humour. Accept this book for what it is (rather then what it is marketed as being) and you will find plenty to enjoy here.
The inclusion of the complete New Testament may be useful if you don't have a bible or if you buy this book as a gift for someone interested in Jesus Christ. However the 'Raw' edition of the book just features the comic book and is cheaper ( although the pages are about half the size). So buy the Raw edition if you only want the comic and don't need the NIV reprint.
The publishers are advertising the 'Complete Manga Bible' for a winter '07 release so if you want stylish renditions of the Old Testament you should wait for that edition.
Whilst this book is very good, I would recommend the Lion Graphic Bible over this. It costs about £6, covers the whole bible and is extremely well put together offering some incredible depth and also features art from 2000AD and Judge Dredd.
My only critisism of this book is that the comic section is very short and misses out some of my favourite moments from the gospels. But it's still a beautiful and brilliant piece of work that makes great reading and could prove a very useful resource for RE or Sunday school teachers.
I have used this book as a teaching aid with a group of 11 to 14 yr old boys who loved the art style. Some even photo copied pages to take home to show siblings. I have also enjoyed reading it for myself.
