VERY DISTURBING - SUPERBLY WRITTEN - A BRILLIANT READ - Rated
Despite being a compelling and heart-wrenching read, this is a fantastic book, written by a couragous and brave man - Duncan Fairhurst.
Duncan has quite literally been to hell and back.
He suffered horrific sexual abuse at the hands of his father, (who apparently only did this "out of love for his son") and his teenage years suffered dramatically as a result.
I cried many times for Duncan whilst reading this book.
However, I also laughed at times due to some of the witty comments he makes and I feel he should be commended for being able to do this despite conveying a very harrowing story.
His childhood was stolen by the person he loved most in the world, his teenage years were spent in a drug induced stupor but he completely turned his life around for his adult years.
Well done Duncan - you are living proof that the human body can quite literally endure all sorts of abuse - you have my utmost respect and admiration.
The Best Book I've Read So Far. - Rated
It's true. I have read this book twice now, every time I have read it, it's made tears fall from my eyes. It's such a sad and emotional rollercoaster, and I totally understand everything he says and means. How he hated the things.. but still liked the company of his father, as I am sure.. everyone craves attention from their parents.. and he didn't get any from his mother. I am glad he went to the police in the end, and turned his life around. This man amazes me, he is so brave, courageous, and after everything that happened in his life he hasn't turned into a bitter hateful man hating all fathers etc. I'd recommend this book to anyone mature enough to read so many emotions at once.
Derivative and formulaic - Rated
'Our Little Secret' is (yet another) confessional autobiography of ex post facto interpretations of childhood. There is really little to distinguish it from the numerous similar sensationalist works that inexplicably enjoy popular delectation.
Following the usual normative structure, it is clearly a product of the ingrained language and stereotypes of its industry. Replete with contradictions and the all-too-familiar simplistic roles of victim, survivor and hero, 'Our Little Secret' will appeal to those who do not wish to challenge their preconceptions and prefer their narratives to conform to a set, nuance-free, formula. Unfortunately, to all others, it has little to recommend it.
Readers seeking an original perspective may care to try Matty Lee's '35 Cents' as a refreshing alternative.

This is true corrage to be able to tell the whole world about such a horrific ordeal.
I must admit I was in tears knowing that a father could be so cruel physicaly and mentaly to such an innocent boy.
glad the father was brought to justice as there are still many people out there that are to affraid to do the same.
NOT for the faint harted
A Uneasy recollection, written brilliantly. - Rated
I have recently read this book and believe that it is written excellently. Fairhusrt has retold his story in an amazingly human way which must not have been easy. Having known Duncan relatively well at University I can honestly say it is an honour to have met someone that has shown such courage to protect others by selflessly reliving his own pain. The book has some painful incidents that are written in such a way that make the reader want to reach out and help, turning every page is like being stood peeking around the corner watching someone so helpless. It also makes people who have not been abused realise, that even getting as close to a victim as the book makes you feel, you never really sink beneath the tip of this murky iceberg.
