I found this book absolutely fantastic. I couldn't put the book down. I was so horrified at the shocking abuse Shy encountered. All I wanted to do was keep reading as I thought at any moment things have to get better for her and luckily it eventually did.
Shy's a truly amazing lady and I give her full credit for being able to tell this very heart renching story of her childhood.
Great book!!
Horrific account of a stolen childhood. - Rated
Firstly, praise goes to Shy Keenan for having the courage to reveal her terrifying childhood story in such a graphic way. I'm sure it dragged up many menories you would love to lay to rest, maybe this book will help you overcome the horrific things you went through. I am so glad the evil in your life was finally uncovered. You are one brave, brave lady bringing your abuser to light. I'm hoping the BBC may repeat the newsnight special, I would be very keen to see that after reading your book.
My only negative view on this book is towards the publishers I guess. I don't wish to take anything away from Shy, as what she went through is unimaginable. But on the front cover it states "The Most Shocking True Story of Abuse Ever Told". I can't help but feel Hodder & Stoughton are slightly using these kind of stories JUST to make money. Given the sensitiveness of the material can they really say that 1 abuse case is any worse than another? I have read many many books on this subject, from Kevin Lewis' "The Kid", Constance Briscoe "Ugly", Dave Pelzer "Child Called It", Peter Roache "Unloved", Donna Ford "The Step Child" and all are equally as upsetting and horrific. Abuse is abuse, if a child is beaten, neglected or sexually abused it's awful! It just feels like publishers are so on the bandwagon with this that they are now playing one book off with another. Each of these accounts have their own incidents which differ from others but all are equally as tragic and shouldn't have been allowed to happen.
Like I said, this isn't aimed at Shy Keenan whatsoever, you are an inspiration to so many people for surviving your childhood. Same goes to all the other author's that have come forward to tell their stories. Recently, Joe Peters book was heartbreaking, very similar to Shy's story in a lot of aspects, extremely well written but so tragic in it's detail. As were both the books about the evil foster parent Eunice Spry. I hope she rots in jail!
Since the Dave Pelzer book there are more and more people coming forward with thier stories which is a great thing. I'm sure it helps a lot of people who had similar experiences. The more people coming forward, maybe the more abusers will be punished.
If I've waffled on a bit then I'm sorry. I just don't like the idea that different publishers are trying to out-do each other by sensationalising somebody's horrific true stories of abuse and survival.
a compelling, eye-opening story - Rated
Not an easy read, but if she can find the strength to tell her tale, we owe it to her to listen. Shy unflinchingly opens her world to us - a world fraught with monsters, sabotage and betrayal. This is someone who had every reason to fail... every reason to wallow in self-pity (I know I would have) and to shun human contact altogether. Instead she's become an advocate, and makes sure we all know what demons live amongst us. This a compelling, eye-opening story - one well worth reading.
How some people live their lives (in secret) - Rated
This book will shock you - a book about a child who was abused from birth, it exposes the Social Services for the totally useless service it provides. Shy's mother was not fit to be a mother and she allowed her step-father to abuse her both sexually and mentally. Shy's step-father was an abusive animal who is obviously of very low intellect and not fit to be called a member of the human race. In addition most of Shy's immediate and extended family should also be ashamed of themselves. I hope Shy makes a million from this book and chooses to spend the money living a life far removed from her roots.
