Cinderella to Fairy Godmother - Rated
I bought this book because the idea sounded new and interesting - a Cinderella type character who doesn't end up finding her Prince Charming but ends up following a completely different path. This was the first Mercedes Lackey book I read and I was pleased. I found the characters amusing and imagery well written, however I was a little dissappointed from halfway onwards; some books, like this, I feel are rushed towards the ending, perhaps due to deadlines. This is just me being very picky but I felt a few more descriptions of a character's feelings, or the imagery for another scene in the story, could have made the book better in my opinion. However, don't let that stop you buying it - for my first Mercedes Lackey it was a good pick. Better check out the Obsidian Trilogy if you like her writing - even better than this!
A different take - Rated
This book has a very different take on an old fairy tale, which is where do all these fairy godmothers come from.!!! It starts with the traditional cinderalla story but changes as the character develops into a fairy godmother, with a very good ending and leaving you wanting to know more about what happens in the future of the five hundred kingdoms. If you want to read children's books but feel embarressed to buy them in the shops, this is one of the best adult versions. So do not be embarressed any more.
A lovely story - Rated
I bought this book on the offchance that it sounded like something I may enjoy. It was recomended to me by Amazon, and it goes to show that they do now what they are talking about because I really enjoyed it. I love books that put a spin on something that is quite well established. The characters are good, and the plot interesting. Though slightly predictable, it is an enoyable read.
Oooh...that's magic! - Rated
This is my first Mercedes Lackey book and I'm very pleased to say it certainly won't be my last. I originally chose the title purely because the idea of leaning on the fairytale theme was appealing. I disagree with one of the readers comments - the one from Ireland - who said it was very boring in the beginning. It had to start at the lowest point in the cinderella - esque character's life in order to develop the story and to clarify how one could manipulate the elements to, perhaps, change the fairy tale's path. The character descriptions were spot on and I finished the book almost wishing I could BE a Godmother...what a fantastic job that would be! All in all, a fine lighthearted read that will having you both laughing out loud and nibbling your nails with nervous tension. Go on..buy it!!
A story based on fairytales, not just Cinderella - Rated
I have always enjoyed Mecedes Lackey's retelling of the fairy tales. This one is I think one of her best. The idea of The Tradition is original and I really like it. It brings together different fairy tales and the virtual reality of 'it can happen to anyone' alive in the book. Elena was a resourceful young lady, efficient and firm, and I admire this character for these traits. A young lady who knows how to save, now that is wonderful. The characters in the novel are bright and alive, very vivid. Randolf was exceptional, the Brownies were down-to-earth and sensible, Elena was not flawless and this made her all the more likeable. Alexander was funny, as an ass and as a man. Julian was rather funny as well, being a bit 'daft' and a bit 'sentimental', the rewriting the letter to his father, tearing it up and weeping over it part tickled me to death! All in all, it was a wonderfully original book with a complete background to the story and a whole new world for fantasy and fairy tale fans to explore and lose oneself in:)
