Good story, not so good characterisation - Rated
The detective stories at the heart of the book are gripping with an exciting finale. There are two murders to be investigated, plus diversions into the personal lives of the main characters. My misgivings about the book are more to do with the construction of the narrative and writing style. I found the chopping and changing within chapters between the parallel stories at times confusing as I tried to keep track of who was whom. Sometimes there is a just a paragraph relating to one story before a switch to another strand of the book. The construction of the book reminded me a bit of a film with short scenes and flash-backs in time. My other negative feeling about the book is that, for me at least, the characters didn't come to life in my mind's eye. By the end of the book I had no mental image of what the characters looked like, whereas with other writers I can visualize their fictional constructions.
For me Karen Fossum is the queen of Scandinavian crime writers.
Much much better! - Rated
As I had hoped, this author's writing has matured since her first book 'Unseen.' The story holds together very well and the characters are well-rounded. The ending is still a little rushed, but at least now it reads as the ending to a novel. Also, on a couple of occasions the translation jarred when the wrong tense and the wrong 'person' were used. However, the author is now starting to develop her own individual style - this is as meticulous as Mankell's but not restricted to a single perspective as with his main protagonist Kurt Wallander. In this respect Mari Jungstedt may eventually prove to be the better writer. Mankell attempted to write from a different perspective in 'Before the Frost' and in my opinion was unable to consistently maintain that perspective. I am looking forward to Jungstedt's next book!
I must have liked it! - Rated
After reading Mari Jungstedt's Unseen - I ordered Unspoken. It arrived on Tuesday and I have now finished reading it - I read the bulk of it when travelling to Helsinki.
I found it gripping and certainly an interesting read; although I did find some of the text a little uncomfortable to read, which I suspect may be a necessary component of novels that are crime and murder related - overall the experience was good. More of these are need I think.
European Crime shows us what we're missing - Rated
The second offering from this author that brings crime to the small island of Swedens Gotland. Well written, beautifully researched it would appear to a layman that the tale could be a true story with the actions of the police as well as principle protagonists being realistic, fully dimensioned and also following a set course that will lead to the answers sought by all. It is for this reason that these books have become addictive with other authors sure to follow in the footsteps of Mari to a more international audience.

Unspoken is the second in a series of novels set on the island
of Gotland off the Swedish coast.Inevitably writers of Swedish
police procedural novels are bound to draw comparison with
Henning Mankell, but this book shows the author developing a
clear and effective style of her own.It is a well-written yarn
that not only keeps the suspense alive until the denouement, but
skillfully displays a society where those with compassion for the plight of others are matched by people indifferent to any concerns
beyond their own. I look forward to the other novels in this series
being translated and available in English.
