Could Have Been Better - Rated Stephen Ambrose states in the foreword that the book is "absolutely absorbing". Even as someone who is interested in the Nixon Presidency I found the diary format turgid. By it's nature a diary is fragmented, and it might have been better if the various topics that were central to the Nixon Presidency were isolated, and the diary set against each topic. These topics would include Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Détente, Watergate and others. I found myself skipping through the diary to follow the story of a particular topic. It could have been better if the layout was as I suggest, although I'm not arguing with the content. I suppose its essential reading for the Watergate buffs, but be advised that Watergate does not appear in the diaries until page 471 of a 698 page book. Yes, it's an important record of events as HR Haldeman saw them. Fascinating for the avid politician, the student of the Nixon Presidency, and Watergate buffs. I wouldn't however advise this book for the casual observer of politics.
