Blaze of Glory - Rated 5/5
For those unfortunate enough to have missed the world premiere of Ravenhill's latest "play with music" at the Royal National Theatre, this script gives at least some indication of the glory that dazzled the Lyttleton stage last summer. Since music played such a vital part in that production, linking the play's vibrant themes with its astonishing mise-en-scene, the publishers have included a piano and vocal arrangement of the songs by Matthew Scott. A marked departure from Ravenhill's previous work, including the notorious "Shopping and F***ing" and "Some Explicit Polaroids", the scenes of "Mother Clap's Molly House" alternate between 18th- and 21st-century London, drawing fundamental parallels between past and present notions of family, sexuality, gender roles, and commerce. Ravenhill added and re-wrote scenes throughout the rehearsal and preview stages, based on feedback from the cast and crew at the National. Thus the final script pulses not only with Ravenhill's boundless creative energy and signature flair for shock value, but also fundamentally embraces the performative aspect of his writing. "Mother Clap's Molly House" drew new and enthusiastic faces to the National, inticing audiences from the theatre fringe right to the heart of London's South Bank, creating a refreshing crossroads of opinions and ideas. Ravenhill also managed to offend a few people, who left the theatre in a huff, ultimately leaving more room for the rest of us who were having a ball. Seeing the performance has inspired me to become somewhat of a Ravenhill scholar; in the following months I will be writing a major research paper on his plays. So please take my advice. If you didn't see the play, read the script. If you did see the play and want to relive it as you would want to relive a perfect night out, read the script. If you wish to keep abreast of the work of London's hottest and most intriguing playwright, well, you know what to do.
