From Michaelangelo to Hockney, the homoerotic has found expression in art. For any fan of the male nude in art, this book is a must, but perhaps the sections on lesbian art are less assured. Emmanuel Cooper's book is ambitious in scope and does not shy away from its remit of exploring this sensitive and emotive topic. The cover is as daring as many of the artists included in the book. Because it is a broad survey, the text can be a little short on substance. It signposts lesser known artists, encouraging the reader to explore their careers elsewhere in more detail. The illustrations could be better and the approach is narrative, rather than analytical. Overall, good value and informative.
